How to turn one shoot into a month of content

The difference between eight assets and thirty is planned before the camera arrives.

Start with the outputs

Most content shoots are planned as a shoot. The productive ones are planned as a delivery list, working backwards.

Write what you need to publish for the next four weeks before you plan a single setup. Then design the day to produce exactly that, plus margin. The order matters more than it sounds, because it changes what you shoot, how you frame it and how long you spend on each setup.

Build the asset list

A typical month for one brand, from one day:

  • Four to six hero shorts, 15 to 30 seconds, vertical
  • Six to eight talking-head or explainer clips
  • Six to ten product or detail clips, no dialogue, usable with any caption
  • Three to four behind-the-scenes cuts
  • Twenty to thirty stills, captured alongside rather than after
  • One longer edit for YouTube or a landing page

That is roughly thirty assets. It comes from around eight to ten setups, not thirty, because most setups yield several outputs once framing has been planned for it.

On the day

  • Frame for the tightest crop first. Shoot vertical-safe, and you can produce 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5 from one take.
  • Shoot wardrobe changes in blocks. Two or three looks make a month of posts appear to span weeks.
  • Capture stills in the same setup. A few minutes each time, rather than a separate shoot later.
  • Record clean audio for everything spoken. Even when you think a clip will be captioned only.
  • Get B-roll of everything. Hands, product, environment, movement. This is what fills gaps in the edit.

In the edit

Cut the longest version of each piece first, then derive the shorter ones from it. Working the other way produces short cuts that cannot be extended.

Build a caption and hook document alongside the edits rather than after them. An asset without a hook written for it usually sits unpublished.

Keep a small reserve. Holding back four or five finished assets gives you something to post in the week when a shoot slips, which it will.
